Embossing FAQs
Got questions?
We’ve got answers for you.
Is embossing the same as raised ink?
No. Embossing physically raises the paper using a metal die and pressure, while raised ink adds height using a printed coating on top of the surface.
What’s the difference between embossing and debossing?
While they are often treated as opposites, they are two sides of the same stamping process. When you emboss one side of the paper, you simultaneously deboss the opposite side, and vice versa.
Do I need special artwork for embossing?
Yes. Embossing works best with vector artwork and clearly defined shapes. Very fine details may need adjustment to ensure a clean, consistent result.
Can embossing be combined with foil or ink?
Yes. Embossing can be used on its own (blind) or registered with printed ink or foil to highlight logos, names, or other key elements.
What kind of paper works best for embossing?
Embossing performs best on thicker, softer stocks—often uncoated or lightly textured—so the raised detail is more visible and tactile.
Who typically uses embossed business cards?
Embossed cards are popular with law firms, consultants, design studios, luxury brands, and anyone who wants a refined, understated premium finish.
